Phototherapy … and a thank you to NASA!

Updated: Jul 20, 2022

“I have used light therapy before so knew vaguely what to expect when booking time under the canopy. Although I was aware of my face being closely covered, the 15 minutes was not claustrophobic in any way, quite comforting and cosy actually. I could very happily have been engulfed by nap had I allowed myself to publicly snore!

Having entered a second period of adult acne, I received a combination of red & blue light for regeneration & antibac / spot prevention. The morning after my session my face was calmer and had a more even overall colour with less redness. The active spots were much reduced in size and were less angry. These have continued to diminish in the 2 days post therapy and no new spots have emerged. I would be under the canopy multiple times a week if practicality permitted it, light therapy certainly helps my skin.”

I don’t normally start with a client review…. However this piece is quite tech heavy. So I thought you’d want to know JUST how amazing this machine is right from the start.

EDIT: and I have updated this blog to include a short video explaining how I am using Red Light Phototherapy to help with my own recovery from total hip replacement surgery.

I hope this piece explains exactly what happens as you snooze under the canopy…. Because believe me, this is the ultimate in beauty sleep!

WHAT IS LED LIGHT THERAPY?

Back in the 1980’s NASA scientists discovered that LEDs stimulate plant growth. While this is useful for growing veg in space, they also realised it had the same stimulating effect on the skin.

Light emitting diode (LED) therapy is a non-invasive facial treatment that uses different wavelengths of light to activate the skin cells needed to treat acne, restore radiance, promote skin rejuvenation, calm inflammation and reduce the signs of ageing.

There are several different colours of LEDs varying in wavelength that each have unique benefits for the skin. They can be used alone or in combination to achieve results out of this world.

HOW DOES EACH LED WAVELENGTH (COLOUR) BENEFIT THE SKIN?

BLUE LED

Blue light targets the sebaceous glands that produce a natural oil called sebum to keep the skin hydrated. Sebaceous glands are highly sensitive and can easily become overactive and produce excess sebum which can lead to clogged pores - the main cause of acne. Blue LED light therapy calms the sebaceous glands to reduce the appearance of acne as well as help to prevent future breakouts.

Blue light LED therapy also has antibacterial properties that help to eliminate bacteria build-up beneath the skin for severe acne pimples such as nodules and cysts that lie deep beneath the surface.

To really effectively treat acne with LED it is best to do a course of treatments consisting of a combination of blue light and near infrared LED light therapy. Alternating each one on a weekly basis.

NEAR INFRARED LIGHT

Invisible to the naked eye, this light kickstarts the skin’s rejuvenation process and is most commonly used to heal scars, sun damage, calm acne, eczema, rosacea and psoriasis flare-ups. But it also comes with additional benefits of boosting circulation for a healthy glow, flushing waste from the skin by accelerating lymphatic flow, increasing hyaluronic acid, collagen and elastin production giving you a more hydrated and youthful complexion. As stated above, It is often used in combination with blue light when treating acne.

RED LIGHT

Red light is aimed at the mitochondria which are found in every living cell in the body. They act as the engine of a cell and generate energy for its activities. The stronger the mitochondria, the more power they have to function.Red light strengthens the mitochondria which allow cells to rejuvenate and heal quicker, as well as stimulate collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid more efficiently.
